Chapter

Twenty-One

The workshop was quiet and peaceful. Phin took in a deep breath. Now that he had cleaned and organized much of the main work area, the place no longer smelled like dirt and mildew. Instead, the scent was as it should be in a place for inventors: oil, hot metal, and a faint tang of sweat.

It was a rare, quiet, solitary moment. Most often recently, either Oswald or Zachariah, frequently both, were in the workshop with him. But the two of them had gone to check on the RADAR, to make sure it continued to operate and that no one or no thing had tampered with it. Thus, Phin had a few moments to take in the special ambience of the place without any interruptions before he had to meet Grace to carve a way through the foliage to the chandlery.

It wouldn’t be difficult this time, he thought, not like when they mindlessly wandered before they ran into the dungeon door. Grace knew exactly where it was and, even if they had to cut their way through some bushes, there would be an underlying path. He hoped that meant there wouldn’t be too many trees in the way. He wasn’t sure how fast the varieties here grew.

The soft susurrus of voices had him craning his neck to look out the window. Still not seeing the source, he inched into the doorway. The sound was more familiar there, the recognizable voices of the twins. They sometimes played near the workshop, and today must have been one of those times. But then he heard another person speak, and his senses went on alert.

“You will not escape me, hero. No one can rescue the fair maiden. Mwahaha.”

Phin couldn’t have stopped the enormous grin from leaping onto his face if he’d tried. He poked his head around to get a look at the scene.

Iris and Isaac sat on the ground, Clank watching them from where he lounged a few feet away. In between them was Alina, her dark leather a contrast to the children’s bright yellow and red clothing for the day. She held in her hand a sewn doll of what looked like a sneering man in a top hat and dark clothes. As Phin watched, she shook the doll like it was dancing on its feet.

“What? Nothing to say? You are no hero, Isaac Lurcock. You will never have the power to defeat me.”

Isaac, giggling like his sister was, held up his own doll, which looked remarkably like him. “You can’t take the fair maiden,” he said, making his doll bounce from foot to foot. “I have trained my whole life to use my sword, and I will beat you up.”

He picked up a stick and held it on the doll’s hand, then crashed the toy into the one in Alina’s hand. Four times he swung and smacked his doll against Alina’s, speaking with each strike. “Hya. Ha. Ho. Raaaawwwwrrrr.”

With the last strike, Alina dropped her doll to the ground. “Nooooo. Oh, no.
